Once again, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated in Dublin with an amazing program of events as part of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival. From the 16 of February to the 4th of March the city of Dublin will be animated by traditional and contemporary Chinese activities. A colourful program is to be expected with singing, karaoke competitions, arts and craft, dragon parades and culinary delights… At The Alex Hotel Dublin, we investigated and picked a nice selection of events within a walking distance to the hotel that will delight any Chinese culture enthusiast.

UCD – Spring festival gala Ireland 2018

The Convention Centre in Dublin will be home to an exceptional show with traditional singing and dancing as part of the Spring Festival Gala Ireland 2018. This year’s show promise to impress with the addition of performances by the warrior monks from Songshan Shaolin Temple. You can buy your tickets here.

National Gallery of Ireland – Chinese art workshop with Chun Zhu Wang

Learn more about the Chines New Year festivities at the National Gallery of Ireland with a drawing workshop about the year of the dog with the artist Chun Zhu Wang. All materials are provided and it is a family-friendly event. The workshop takes place on the Sunday 18th of February at 11:30 and is free of charge.

Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane – Chinese New Year: Year of the Dog

Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane will host a workshop with the artist Barbara O’Connell to explore patterns and create your own stamp to design motifs inspired by Chinese prints. This is a drop in a free family workshop on the 24th of February at 2 pm.

National Library of Ireland – The curious history of Irish dogs

On the 28th of February, the National Library of Ireland offers the opportunity to look through the role of man’s best friend in Irish society as well as Chinese in connection with The year of the dog. The writer of The Curious History of Irish Dogs, David Blake Knox will talk about the nine breeds of dogs native to Ireland and the unique roles that each have played in Irish history. The artist Angela Wang will join the event by creating live illustrations inspired by the talk. Entry is €5, the talk will be starting at 18:30. You can book your tickets here.

Chester Beatty Library – Chinese modernist paintings

You can celebrate contemporary Chinese art with a painting workshop at the Chester Beatty Library themed around Chinese architecture in the style of Chinese formalism. You will be invited to create ink paintings inspired by this artistic movement and explore the Western influences on traditional Chinese art.

The Tara Building – MANHUA – Chinese comic book workshop

This is probably one of the most exciting artistic workshops, happening on the Saturday 24th of February from 5 pm to 7 pm, you will learn about the Chinese art of manhua through drawing and making your own comic book! Using the style of Chinese manhua artist using pencils, bamboo brushes and ink. This workshop is for adult only, tickets are €10 and can be purchased online here.
